History of Medicine in China
Section Info:
This seminar investigates key themes in Chinese history through the study of medicine and healing traditions. By using China as a historical case study, we explore medicine as both a scientific discipline and a cultural and socio-economic force. Topics include prevailing healing traditions, patient-practitioner dynamics, gender and reproduction, and the historical contexts of epidemics, colonialism, and nationalism. Special attention will be given to how Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) became an integral part in contemporary healthcare practices. This course is open to students from all academic backgrounds.
