Credit: 3 hours.

Capstone course required of all majors. Students will make history by researching and writing a work of original scholarship. Several of these seminars are offered each term and each focuses on a special topic, thus allowing students with similar interests to work through the process of gathering, interpreting, and organizing historical evidence under the direction of an expert in the field. The topics on offer each semester will be listed in the Class Schedule and described in the department's course guide at http://www.history.illinois.edu.

3 undergraduate hours. No graduate credit. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours.

Political Movements in US Hist
Section Info:
Topic: Political Movements in US History Description: This course will examine nineteenth and twentieth century political movements that challenged the political, social, and economic norms in the United States. We will explore specific reform movements, the conditions they sought to address, and the opposition they faced. Additionally, we will explore the historiographical developments that shape historians’ understandings of each movement. Students will choose a political movement that they will research with a range of primary sources to complete a research paper that contributes to scholarly conversations related to the specific movement and political history more broadly.

Topic: Life and Death in World War II Description: This course is designed to allow students to a write a substantial research or historiographical paper through an investigations of topics on World War II. To introduce the subject and to prompt ideas, we will look at seven thematic areas: 1) the isolationist temper in the United States; 2) Black America and the overall mythology of the “people’s war;” 3) life in German-occupied France and the Japanese-occupied Philippines; 4) Germany’s “final solution” against Jews; 5) the Allied bombing campaign; 6) combat; and 7) sex and rape at war’s end. Common readings will focus on diaries, reportages, novels, and films.
