Topic: Empires in History and Myth Description: This course will examine the significance of empire as an institution that has dominated human history as well as a structure that has cast a shadow, for better and worse, over popular culture. We will analyze the various forms of empire historically and consider how fictional portrayals have been influenced and, in turn, influence our understandings of empire. In doing so, we will focus on major empires from across the globe, throughout history, and in various fictional accounts. From early empires in the Middle East to the Galactic Empire in Star Wars, we will look at historical, literary, and cinematic depictions of empires. By alternating between different genres, we will see how powerful empire was historically as well as its influence on the world we live in today.
