Description: For centuries, France symbolized the height of European civilization. With its revolutionary, imperial, intellectual, and cultural traditions its global influence was legendary. However, as the twentieth century progressed French dominance waned. As we enter the twenty-first century, it may once again be on the rise. How do we explain France's changing status on the world's stage? In what ways does France continue to influence the course of global events? What is the modern history of this nation? From World War II and decolonization, through student and sexual revolutions, from battles over anti-Semitism, feminism, immigration, and race, to those over modernization and globalization, we will study the history of modern France with an aim towards understanding France's shifting identity in the postwar world. The historical analysis of film, music, television, and literature will be integral to our work.
