This course provides support through a team-based approach for BHWELL scholars during field placement, while highlighting techniques, skills, and evidence-based practices that students will need to function at a high level as a clinical social worker and behavioral health consultant in primary care settings, with emphasis on underserved populations and areas as defined by HRSA. Required seminar for BHWELL scholars on the integration of behavioral health and primary care. Course pre-requisites are SOCW 515 and SOCW 553; or by permission of BHWELL Project Director. There are 3 interactive online BHWELL discussion seminars that will take place via Zoom from 6:30-8:00 pm: dates TBD.

Section Info:
Substance Use Treatment in Social Work. Introduces selected counseling approaches for substance use disorders. Begins with an overview of the causes of substance use disorders, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning. Focuses on treatment theories and techniques applied to counseling people struggling with substance use. Selected theories include 12 Step approaches, cognitive and behavioral theories, family systems theory, harm reduction, and motivational interviewing. Special attention is devoted to applying substance use treatment models with diverse populations. Class meets first 8 weeks of semester.

Telehealth & Clinical SW
Section Info:
Telehealth & Clinical Social Work: Telehealth, mobile technology, and digital communication are gaining widespread use in social work direct practice and can increase access to mental and behavioral health care. This 8-week course covers types of telehealth, ethics, professional standards and etiquette, online therapy tools, clinical skills, evidence-based practices, and telehealth policies. Strengths and limitations of these evolving technologies will be reviewed, and best practices for access, equity, digital health literacy, and cultural competence will be considered throughout. The course will include presentations, readings/video assignments, case studies, role-playing, progress notes, hands-on skills training, and a final project. This is a 2-credit hour course. The class meets the 2nd 8 weeks of the semester.

SOCW 561 E: Issues Surrounding Mental Illness in Library and Social Service Settings. This course meets the first 8 weeks of the semester. This 2-credit course provides a humanistic approach to and overview of common issues surrounding mental illness symptoms in library and social service settings. Students will learn about various mental illness symptoms, their etiology and intersecting contexts (race, class, age, sexual orientation gender identity), and resulting experiences of stigma, exclusion, and discrimination, and about common countertransference issues and strategies for engaging and addressing the diverse needs of patrons/clients so as to avoid compassion fatigue.

Students are introduced to trauma-informed approaches to mental health crisis intervention in social work and library settings. Common mental health emergencies and presentations, and evidence-based, integrative frameworks for triage, risk assessment and management are covered. Students learn course content through deliberate practice, simulations, lectures, readings, discussions and case studies. The course covers de-escalation skills, professional fears about crises and emphasizes ways to avoid compassion fatigue while creating safe and healthy work environments.

Participants will explore current issues in the field related to the intersection between young children with disabilities and trauma. Specifically, topics will focus on the provision of trauma-informed care, work with families, self-care, prevention, and building awareness related to the connection between trauma and disability. Additionally, there will be a focus on cross-disciplinary work to enhance services for young children.
