Integrated Behavorial Health & Health Care

Credit: 4 hours.

Students will learn therapeutic approaches, brief interventions and bioethical frameworks to help patients/family navigate illness, disability, and healthcare systems and promote health and wellness. Students will learn roles and functions of clinical social workers in healthcare settings with special attention to Integrated Care models and roles of the behavioral health consultant/provider and medical social worker on healthcare teams. Holistic biopsychosocial models that are patient/family centered, team-based, collaborative, and that integrate physical and behavioral health care to address social determinants of health and health equity will be emphasized. Common chronic and acute health conditions and medical terminology are discussed as well as evidence-based psychosocial interventions in hospital, primary care, and other outpatient settings.

4 graduate hours. No professional credit. Prerequisite: Admission to MSW program.

2021 CHICAGO iMSW cohort This class will meet face to face on the following 4 Saturdays at the Illini Center (200 S. Wacker Dr., Chicago) from 12:30-4:00pm - 2/4, 3/4, 4/15, and 5/6/2023. We offer two Interprofessional Education events with students from other health professions as part of this course. At least one of them is required (alternative assignment available upon request). IPE dates are Tuesday, February 7, 2023, either 8-Noon or 1-5pm (VIRTUAL event) and Tuesday OR Wednesday, April 11 or 12, 2023, from 10-2pm. More detail, if needed: What: 2023 IPE Peoria Immersion Day (Interprofessional Education = IPE) Who: Social Work, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Counseling, Occupational Therapy, etc. (about 480 students from 7 different disciplines) Where: ONLINE When: Tuesday, February 7, 2023, either 8:30-Noon or 12:30-5. (Students will be assigned to either the AM or PM schedule; during sign-up students can indicate if they have a conflict with one of the time slots). Required: Yes (if neither of these time frames are possible, there will be an alternative online assignment) What: 2023 Musculoskeletal Case IPE Who: Social Work, Medicine, and Nursing students (about 150 students, working in groups of 6-8 students) Where: IN-PERSON at the Simulation Center on Urbana campus When: You will sign up for EITHER day -- Tues or Wed, April 11 or 12, 2023 —and the event occurs between 10-2 (everyone meets 10-11, and then each student is assigned to either 11-12 or 1-2 time with their team and simulated patient) Required: No but strongly recommended
