Intensive or comparative study of specific repertoires of instrumental music, or of particular genres or styles of instrumental composition and performance practice, and/or of particular instrumentalists. Includes broad reading in the social and intellectual climate of the musical practices at issue; pertinent analytical approaches or paradigms; and work with relevant source materials.

4 graduate hours. No professional credit. May be repeated to a maximum of 8 hours. Prerequisite: MUS 528 A (consult Class Schedule for specific section information); graduate standing in Musicology; Music and Sound Studies graduate minor; or consent of instructor.

Topic: "CULTURAL HISTORY OF THE KEYBOARD." This seminar will explore the of history of the keyboard through the lenses of organology and cultural history; it will explore the development of the instrument, from late antiquity to the present, within the cultural context of each corresponding period to develop an understanding of the keyboard’s place in the processes of meaning-making, identity, politics, and the historiography of Western music. A written research project, or hybrid research/performance project, is required.
