Topic: "ANTHROPOLOGY OF MUSIC: FICTION, POETRY, AND PERFORMANCE AS MUSIC ETHNOGRAPHY." In this course, we consider creative expression and its relationship to music ethnography. Music scholars and other articulators of socio-musical knowledge have shared their knowledge not only in scholarly books and articles but in sound recording, on the stage and screen, and in novels, short stories, and poetry. Such creative expressions have been debated and theorized by scholars in anthropology, performance studies, ethnomusicology, and beyond, offering ways of challenging structures of access and representation in the production of knowledge. We will view, read, and listen to a range of works that represent theoretical and critical approaches to the study and expression of musical knowledge.
