Credit: 3 hours.

Introduction to the study of the dominant genres or types U.S. cinema. Examines the elements that constitute genres (such as visual and narrative patterns), the formation and reshaping of genres by filmmakers and the entertainment industry, the social and cultural factors that influence the genre cycles and subgenres, and the landmark works of each genre. The course treats several genres in historical perspective or focus on a single genre.

May be repeated in separate terms up to 6 hours if topics vary.

FA23 ENGL 270 American Film Genres, Ramon Soto Crespo: Green Cinema -This course examines films on environmental issues, topics of sustainability, and green politics. We will discuss classic films such as Soylent Green, A Civil Action, and Erin Brockovich, along with short new films from green cinema (Pantanal, SB2508, and We Trees). This combination of classic and cutting-edge films will bring us up to speed with today's politics. Two main texts will provide the context for understanding film urgency: Matthew Laurence and Laurie Laybourn-Langton’s Planet on Fire (2021) and Andreas Malm’s Fighting in a World on Fire (2023). Films will be screened during class time—requirements: regular attendance, active participation in class discussion, and a few response papers.
