Required for students who are entering the History graduate program. This course is the first half of a two-term sequence designed for first year students in the History Ph.D. program at Illinois. Description: We will take a broad view of “approaches and methods” as we engage with questions about historical modes of thinking, argumentation, and writing. We’ll consider the role of theory, evidence, and archives in our work and examine different genres of historical writing we can employ. You will translate all this into a plan to research and write an article-length study the following semester. Through a series of assignments, we will grapple together with some of the specific challenges that face us as practitioners of the discipline: identifying the historical problem, examining the methods scholars use, articulating what we already know about the problem, understanding the use of primary sources as evidence, and reaching significant conclusions. The syllabus will explore these issues across a range of topics, methods, regions, and periods, and formats.
Restriction(s):
