Description: This course examines the emergence of Global History as a major field of historical research and teaching. We will read works that range from materialist approaches to those that emphasize culture and subjectivities, which nonetheless (often) share a commitment to writing global histories without a determinant center. After reading some definitional works in the first part of this class, the second part will consist of more recently published historical monographs and syntheses, most set in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which offer innovative methodologies to expand the possibilities of global history. In addition to these common readings, each student will also investigate one chosen week’s global history topic in greater depth.
