May be repeated to a maximum of 16. (Summer session, 2 or 4 graduate hours). Prerequisite: Graduate standing in musicology or consent of instructor. Graduate students in music will be considered if they passed MUS 528A (consult Class Schedule for specific section information).

TOPIC: "Ernest Chausson and the Symbolist Movement." This seminar centers on the life and works of French composer Ernest Chausson (1855-1899) as a point of departure for studying the innovations and philosophies of the Symbolist Movement, its major exponents, and its influence on modern art. Topics will highlight the intersections of music and the Industrial Revolution, climate change, globalization, and “the exotic” in fin de siècle art. All participants shall organize and lead at least one seminar session; a written or performed project relating to the seminar topic is expected.
