Music Rep and Composition
Section Info:
TOPIC: "Music Representation and Composition." Online section. This course explores designing and implementing music composition software. The first third of the course is spent building a working composition system called 'musx' that implements classes of musical events and containers, functional tools for manipulating symbolic musical information, file based input and output, and scheduling services for running musical generators and computing musical scores. The second third of the course uses the musx system to explore a variety of different algorithmic techniques for computing compositions: mapping and transformation, pattern generation, Markov chains, cellular automata, and chaos, and microtonality and spectral composition. The last part of the course will consist of individual composition projects that involve extending and augmenting the musx system to suit the interests of each composer. The final exam will consist of a concert and demonstration of the final projects. Prerequisites: You must be able to program in Python3 and be reasonably fluent with music theory concepts such as pitches, intervals, chord types, scales, rhythm, tempo, dynamics and articulation. Requires the consent of the instructor. Please contact Prof. Rick Taube (taube@illinois.edu) if you have any questions.
