SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 3 hours.

Examination of the social context, function and meaning of music/music-making in one or more communities, from one or more areas of the world, in one or more time periods. May address music in relation to such social issues as gender and sexualities, ethnicity, politics, etc.

3 undergraduate hours. 3 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours if topic varies. Prerequisite: MUS 313 and MUS 314, and junior standing in music; or consent of instructor.

Eagen-Jones, M	Part of Term: 1 Date Range: 01/25/21-05/05/21 Section Info: TOPIC: “Women and Music, ca. 1200-1650.” This course explores and celebrates women’s musical activities of ca. 1200–1650 and, additionally, examines the representation of women in music by men. After establishing a framework for discussion, the course proceeds in five parts: 1) music in women’s monasteries, 2) women as creative artists, 3) women as patrons, 4) representations of holy women, and 5) representations of women on stage. Broadly, this course offers a view on women’s agency and gender politics as these are expressed through musical sounds in (mainly) pre-modern and early modern Europe. In addition to completing weekly readings and participating in discussions, semester grades will be based on two projects: one collaborative, one individual.
