Topic Section 1G: ENGL 460: Claiming Race. Recently, some white people have claimed to be or have identified as Black. During the United States’ history, some Blacks have attempted (and occasionally succeeded) to pass as white. Other racial groups have their own takes on this asymmetrical process of racial (dis)identification. In this class, students will interrogate literary accounts of the ways some members of minority groups try to be like the dominant group and ways some members of dominant racial groups appropriate minority identifies for their own purposes. We’ll trace the ways novelists (sometimes seriously, sometimes humorously, sometimes satirically, sometimes tragically) confront the realities and misconceptions of these phenomena. Students will also consider how their own racial identities impact their private and public lives. Texts will include Nella Larsen’s Passing, George Schuyler’s Black No More, Piri Thomas’ Down These Mean Streets, Joy Castro’s Island of Bones, Jess Row’s Your Face in Mine, Maurice Carlos Ruffin’s We Cast a Shadow, and Jordan Peele’s Get Out. Students can expect portfolio-based writing assignments, an exam, and discussion-based, seminar-style classes.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
