Students will be responsible for completing all assigned reading prior to class and are expected to participate in class discussions. Students will learn about major historiographical and pedagogical debates in the field including, but not limited to agency among the enslaved, the concept of “social death,” the economics of slavery, paternalism, and accommodation and resistance, race and gender.
