Description: This course examines what capitalism is and how it developed from its origins to become a major system or set of relations structuring societies economically, socially, and politically on a global scale. This course will explore the central role of enslavement, imperialism, and settler colonialism to the development of global capitalism, and look at how and why capitalism has changed -- and remained the same -- over time. It will look at the historical relationship between capitalism and the state, capitalism and nationalism, capitalism and race, capitalism and gender, capitalism and violence, and capitalism and culture. It will also examine movements and institutions that working people developed as a response or challenge to capitalism, and how they have affected societies.
