Title: The Middle East (including Israel) after WW1 - politics, cultures, societies. Description: Erdogan, ISIS, Oil money, Islamism, Caliphate, the revolution in Iran, the civil war in Syria, the Arab Spring, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Yazidi persecution, Jihad – In this dynamic fascinating and fast moving course, we will touch upon the issues, questions and controversies that continuously draw the attention of the world to the Middle East. Getting to know basic concepts (like Jihad, caliphate, political Islam etc.) we will gain knowledge that will allow us to better understand the current state of affairs. Room will be given for students to raise subjects they wish to learn more about and meetings will include weekly discussions in class. Grade will be based on written assignments including a final 10 pages paper. Some written assignments could be replaced with presentations, comics etc. pending pre-approval.
