Section Title:
Imaging/Imagining the Americas
Section Info:
Topic: Imaging/Imagining the Americas: Cartography and Ecology Across the Renaissance Atlantic. Immediately following the “discovery” of the Americas, Europeans made major efforts to render the New World visually intelligible. These efforts included mapping out its terrain cartographically, as well as documenting its plants and animals in paintings, woodcuts, and engravings. Moreover, Europeans were not alone in these endeavors. Indigenous peoples created their own maps and other images of their environments and ecologies, even developing entirely new genres of visual media.
