Section Info:
For Fall 2020, History of Photography will be taught online in an asynchronous manner; there will be no required synchronous discussions, though some optional ones will be provided. This course introduces students to the history of photography in a global context from the mid-19th century to today. Organized thematically around a number of critical frameworks—such as “Mapping the Land,” “Fashion,” or “Pictures of War,”—this course seeks to expose students to as diverse set of practices and locales possible. Each week we will explore a new critical framework, and discuss contemporary and historical examples together. When we discuss “Technology,” for example, we will look at digital media and apps like Instagram and TikTok in relation to early 19th century analog processes such as daguerreotype.
