Section Title:
EMANCIPATORY INQUIRY ED & ARTS
Section Info:
"Emancipatory Inquiry in Education and Arts." In this course we will examine the use and design of research approaches in education and/or the arts that prioritize an emancipatory perspective and/or empower participants as co-researchers. We will read and discuss research from the narrative, arts-based, and critical action strands of educational research; consider the theoretical frameworks and commitments that undergird them; and wrestle with the inherent methodological issues (representation, voice, identity, and validity) that arise from these strands of interpretive, humanistic inquiry. This course is intended to cross disciplinary boundaries and to appeal to graduate students from a wide variety of scholarly backgrounds within the College of Fine and Applied Arts and the College of Education. In order to get the most out of the class, I recommend that you have at least one prior research course in your home discipline.
