Section Title:
AMERICAN OPERA SINCE 1900
Section Info:
AMERICAN OPERA SINCE 1900. This course surveys a range of twentieth- and twenty-first-century American operas, including Gershwin’s "Porgy and Bess," Menotti’s "Amahl and the Night Visitors," Adams’s "The Death of Klinghoffer," and Okoye’s "Harriet Tubman." Through these and other works, we will discover the social, political, economic, historical, and technological frameworks that contributed to their creation and reception. Assessments include a midterm and final exam; weekly preparation of assigned readings, listening, and viewing; and a final research paper or creative project on an approved topic of their choice. Additionally, graduate students will lead in-class discussions of assigned readings and complete a more in-depth final project.
