Section Title:
Music of the Renaissance
Section Info:
MUSIC OF THE RENAISSANCE. This course will be a cultural and material history of instrumental and vocal music in the Renaissance (broadly construed as 1400-1600). It explores the dynamics between music and power (institutions), the role of technology in the codification, preservation and reproduction of music, and the relationships between geography, the environment and music. The course aims to nuance the traditional Euro-centric manifestation of this period by exploring the growing networks of musical transmission in the increasingly globalized economy created by age of exploration. This course will be a combination of lecture and seminar-style discussion. Students will be required to complete a final project that may be written or performed.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to students in the Music department.
