This course provides an opportunity for participants to intimately study the creative process of musical improvisation in singing. Students will examine the language and history of music-making through extensive listening, observation, and research of artists, composers, and songs. A broad spectrum of styles and schools of influence associated with such genre as blues, spirituals, the Great American Songbook, jazz, pop, R & B, rock, and other forms will provide a foundation for exploration. No prior experience is necessary, and the direction of the class will be influenced by the creative elements that individuals bring to the course.

This course gives students who’ve never completed a composition on a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) an opportunity to explore urban and popular music beatmaking (traditionally referred to as instrumental music composition) from a lens of analysis, creative, and technical understanding, and to apply that creative and technical understanding in producing original music. Students work directly with a music industry professional to produce original music of their own. This course is for beginning DAW users.
