Section Title:
String Quartet Haydn to Ravel
Section Info:
"The String Quartet from Haydn to Ravel." In this class we will examine the genre of the string quartet, from its Classical beginnings in the works of Haydn, through the nineteenth century (works by, e.g., Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Dvorak), and into the early twentieth, culminating in the music of Ravel and his contemporaries. Questions of musical style, aesthetics, repertoire formation, and social-geographic setting will be addressed, as will the cultural meanings that the string quartet accrued in its European and American contexts. Over the course of the semester, students will develop a topic for a final research paper. They will also undertake listening, score-study, and reading assignments; attend and critique at least one string quartet recital on campus; and contribute to weekly class discussion. This class fulfills the Advanced Musicology requirement for DMA curricula.
