Special preparation in specialized fields of musicology, composition-theory, performance, and music education.

0.5 to 4 undergraduate hours. 0.5 to 4 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 8 hours; undergraduate students in open studies may repeat the course unlimited times with approval of the open studies advisor. Prerequisite: Senior or graduate standing in music or music education; consent of instructor.

The course will be presented as a combination of lectures with hands-on projects to familiarize students with proper gain and signal staging, microphone placement, and recording practices. Grading will be based on assigned lab projects and written exams. Lab times will be assigned. This course is restricted to senior and graduate music majors. Topics include choral decorum, conducting, song selection, and vocal and instrumental techniques. Additionally, participants attend musical rehearsals and perform the repertoire learned during Symposium in a closing concert. The Black Sacred Music Symposium will be Thursday-Sunday, March 9-12, 2017 in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.

Section Info: Electroacoustic Music Collaboration: This course targets performers and composers interested in developing greater fluency with electroacoustic art music. Students form composer-performer duos and spend the semester engaged in a collaborative composition project for their particular instrument(s). Teams meet on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to discuss, share, and critique progress. Pieces are presented in concert at the end of the semester. Collaborative groupings may flex depending on enrollment. Composer prerequisite: Senior or graduate standing in music and completion of MUS 409 or equivalent. Performer prerequisite: Senior or graduate standing in music or permission of the instructor.
