Topic: US Riots, Revolutions, & Revolts Description: This course will explore conflict and division in American History through the Reacting to the Past program, in which students enact roles as historical figures in weeks-long games designed to immerse students in historical moments. This course will be focusing on three pivotal moments in United States History: the political and social chaos surrounding revolutionary New York City in Patriots, Loyalists, and Revolution; the beginning of the modern era, complete with bohemian lifestyles, women's rights, and urbanization in Greenwich Village 1913: Suffrage, Labor, and the New Woman; and the convergence of a fractured political party, mainstream and underground journalists, and radical protestors at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago 1968. During both periods, issues of changing gender and social roles, immigration, and political ideologies clash amongst each other as individuals and groups attempted to remake a broken society.

Topic: The Tudors: State and Theatre Description: This interdisciplinary course is centered on the Reacting to the Past pedagogy which immerses students into the roles of the very historical peoples we will be studying, in this case prominent historical figures from the Tudor period of English history (1485-1603), We will do so through two games, focusing on two historical moments: Henry VIII and the Reformation Parliament, and Stages of Power: Marlowe and Shakespeare, 1592. Both games highlight issues of state and national identity, performance (in Parliament and on stage), social and cultural reformation, and religious transitions during the English Reformation involving conflicts of power and authority. These themes will be reinforced throught lectures and assignments during preparation. The class will conclude with students performing short portions of plays by Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare.
