Dramaturgs Workshop
Section Info:
In this workshop we'll examine the role of the dramaturg, and dramaturgy more broadly, as engaged with types of research that benefit the development of new dramas as well as the production of existing works. We will take some of our initial cues about the nature of research in the theatre from British director Katie Mitchell (The Director’s Craft, 2008), who has worked extensively in spoken theatre, with complex multimedia art forms, and in opera. We will examine a similarly broad spectrum of theatrical genres in the course. The work of American dramaturg Mark Bly will also serve as a guide. Modules of the course devoted to production will include two works mounted by Lyric Theatre@Illinois during the semester: Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Cole Porter's Kiss Me, Kate. We will also consider Katie Mitchell’s productions of George Benjamin's opera Written on Skin (2012) and Handel's opera Alcina (2015), together with some of her non-operatic productions.
