Seminar devoted to intensive study in the music of specific peoples, states, or geographic regions from around the world.

3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 undergraduate hours or 16 graduate hours. Prerequisite: MUS 313 and MUS 314; junior standing; or consent of instructor.

How does music reflect the impact of glasnost, perestroika, ethnic nationalism, war, border changes, displaced populations, and EU politics in the western Balkans? This course represents an intensive survey of musical life in Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, and Slovenia, paying particular attention to how politics, ethnicity, nationalism, gender, religion, and changing senses of place and belonging have influenced the development of musical style since the late Middle Ages. Topics may include Albanian wedding music, Bosnian and Serbian epic song, Bosnian and Hercegovinian diaphonic choral music, Croatian and Serbian tamburitsa orchestras, Macedonian and Serbian Rom brass bands, instrumental ensembles from Kosovo, Yugoslav ethno-pop, and Serbian turbo-folk music, among many others. Course materials will include key, book-length ethnographic studies as well as journal articles and descriptive surveys, and films, music videos, and audio recordings.
