TOPIC: Music of the Western Balkans What can music tell us about the nature of late and post-socialism in the recently independent Balkan states? How does music reflect the impact of glasnost, perestroika, ethnic nationalism, war, border changes, displaced populations, and EU politics in the western Balkans? This course represents an intensive survey of musical life in Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, and Slovenia, paying particular attention to how politics, ethnicity, nationalism, gender, religion, and changing senses of place and belonging have influenced the development of musical style since the late Middle Ages. Topics may include Albanian wedding music, Bosnian and Serbian epic song, Bosnian and Hercegovinian diaphonic choral music, Croatian and Serbian tamburitsa orchestras, Macedonian and Serbian Rom brass bands, instrumental ensembles from Kosovo, Yugoslav ethno-pop, and Serbian turbo-folk music, among many others. Course materials will include key, book-length ethnographic studies as well as journal articles and descriptive surveys, and films, music videos, and audio recordings.
