A great deal of history has taken place in the last 15 years, and US writers have tried extremely hard to keep up with the new, or what at least seems to have changed in American culture from preceding decades. One may think of those differences as marking the discrepancy between the world students have been born into and the one in which their parents are at home. Sometimes, that contemporary quality is registered as technology, but it is also found in our writers' close analysis and subtle representation of the social, economic, and sometimes political circumstances of the age. The novelist and story writers we will be reading may not be the best-known or most popular names of the last decade or so, though all of them have been finalists for some of the most prestigious prizes that the literary community awards. Students can expect a few short papers and hourly exams.
