Section Title:
Corporate Development
Section Info:
Corporate strategy decisions involve defining the firm's scope in terms of geography, technology, markets and levels of integration. The desired changes in the scope can be achieved through several important tools of the corporate strategy: mergers and acquisitions; strategic alliances; interfirm network relationships. While those tools have been widely used for decades, many corporate decisions, especially in acquisitions, continue to lead the firms that make them to spectacularly destructive results. Typically, there are two fundamental reasons for such poor performance: the managers' lack of understanding of how the value is created in their multi-business companies, and the managers' failure to successfully navigate the complexities of acquisitions and alliances. Therefore, we will have two primary objectives in this class. First, we will improve our understanding of what makes a portfolio of businesses under a single corporate umbrella more or less valuable. Second, we will develop and hone the decision-making tools for properly structuring and executing acquisitions and alliances under different business situations. The following are some of the topics we will discuss: proper selection of an acquisition target or an alliance partner; the leader's perspective on planning and implementing the acquisition integration process; learning from alliance partners; building an effective interorganizational network; developing overall acquisition capability and/or alliance capability of the firm; managing alliance portfolios.

Entrepreneurship&Globalization
Section Info:
This course is open to students pursuing the Graduate Minor or Concentration in International Business. When crossing borders entrepreneurs have to face new challenges created by different political, cultural, and economic environments. Under these circumstances, success depends on the companies' abilities to adapt themselves to the new realities, or their capability to transform the local economy to their needs. This adaptation demands flexibility in the companies' managerial organization, creativity at dealing with different legal cultures, and strong emphasis on technological innovation. By studying several cases in different historical moments, this course will explore how the adaptation of different companies to diverse and sometimes hostile environments permitted the creation of the global economy as we know it.

Operations Strategy
Section Info:
This course is open to students pursuing the Graduate Minor or Concentration in Supply Chain Management. Operations strategy examines how manufacturing or operations in general can be used as sources of competitive advantage. Some firms compete based on innovative and high-performing products. Others may rely on rapid delivery, flexibility to accommodate specific customer needs, or cost leadership. The capabilities that allow the pursuit of these strategies are usually the result of well formulated and executed operations strategies. This course illuminates the fundamental underlying drivers that make the pursuit of these and other strategies possible and/or desirable within different contexts. The course uses cutting edge theory as well as business cases that illustrate the theoretical concepts. We will meet once a week for an evening of stimulating discussion that links together and deepens the understanding of concepts learned in core Competitive Strategy and Operations/Process Management classes.

Section Title:
Power & Leadership in Orgs.
Section Info:
Organizations are political systems and leadership is, among other things, a deeply political task. As people try to ascend through organizational hierarchies they inevitably confront political dynamics and come face to face with the realities of power. Those who are fortunate enough to achieve positions of authority are ultimately confronted with the problem of using power. This task, which involves numerous practical, ethical, and personal challenges, can be even more demanding than the task of attaining power in the first place. This course has two basic and interrelated purposes. The first is to help students better understand power in organizations and to become more effective political actors in their professional careers. The second is to explore the nature of the outwardly similar but less tangible thing called leadership, and to carefully consider its relationship to power itself. In pursuing this latter objective, we will address important normative questions about power's legitimate purposes and the ethical constraints which should govern its use. We will also consider how the pursuit and attainment of power can affect people. Leadership, as we shall come to see in the course of the class, is an inherently ethical and personal concept. The course attempts to do justice to these aspects of the phenomenon at the same time that it explores complicating political realities. It is about power AND leadership. This means both realism and idealism, both "getting things done" and "doing the right thing." The design of the course is generally similar to my MBA 502 OTD course. We will read a large number of cases and attempt to learn from the experiences of many successful (and failed) organizational politicians/leaders. We will also draw upon a large body of popular management literature and social scientific research which has directly addressed the phenomena of power and leadership in and around organizations. The course will be highly interactive and discussion-based. Grading procedures and expectations will also be similar to those used in OTD.

Managing Prof Service Firms
Section Info:
Professional service firms are a critical part of the global economy. How these firms address the economic, social and technical challenges and provide solutions to their clients' needs play an increasingly important role in today's world. The objective of the course is to understand how these firms are organized, how they manage their human capital, and fulfill their clients' expectations. We will first develop an understanding of what makes professional service firms successful and how they develop and sustain their competitive advantage. Second, we will focus on their unique human capital processes that are critical in executing their strategies by paying special attention to the ways these firms develop professional talents and motivate them to deliver superior client service. Third, we will have the opportunity to bring some of our graduates from these firms to explore how they have leveraged their skills and competencies to develop their careers and to learn from their experiences.

Supply Chain Analytics
Section Info:
This course is open to students pursuing the Graduate Minor or Concentration in Supply Chain Management and the Graduate Concentration in Business Data Analytics. This course is designed to be at the intersection of Supply Chain Management and Business Analytics. With increased IT infrastructure, improved data capture and storage technologies, and improved networking technologies, supply chains are getting inundated with data from several different sources, such as consumer transactions, consumer feedback, consumer inquiries (on-line click streams), supplier contacts, supplier coordination, and supplier evaluation, on several aspects of supply chain such as quality, cost, demand, inventory, risk, and planning, and in various formats such as social media, text, audio, video, geo-spatial, RFID and sensor data, etc. Advances in computing infrastructure such as cluster computing and cloud computing have enabled the storage, retrieval, analysis, and sharing of data over a wide geographical domain including many different supply chain nodes and agents. It is estimated that supply chain data is doubling every two years. This data explosion within supply chains have opened up the opportunity for managers to analyze the data using appropriate tools and techniques to generate insights that can help make better decisions and consequently improve supply chain efficiencies.

Strategic Sourcing
Section Info:
This course is open to students pursuing the Graduate Minor or Concentration in Supply Chain Management. The Walt Disney Company realized $300 millions in annual savings, BellSouth improved its results by $1 billion, and IBM achieved 5% improvement in their margins are just a few of the many companies exploring the benefits of applying strategic sourcing concepts. Strategic Sourcing, also known as the next evolutionary step in supply-chain, is one of the foundation blocks for transforming an organization’s practices to world-class supply management. It is a systematic approach constructed on fact-based analysis and market intelligence for optimizing an organization's supply base and improving the overall value proposition via coordinated effort between the different areas of the organization and external partners. This course will present the strategic sourcing process and its focuses on helping senior executives and managers gain sustainable competitive advantage from their supply chains. You'll learn how to go beyond negotiation, cost-cutting and contract management functions, and successfully lead the redesign and adaptation of supply chains to drive maximum benefit for the entire organization. As the scope of strategic sourcing extends beyond supplier price negotiation, we will also take into account on the total cost of ownership incorporating customer needs, organizational goals, and market conditions rather than just cost as well as on getting the best product/service at the best value rather than getting the cheapest product/service. Hence, the objective of this course is to study how to enclose the reduction of cost while maintaining and/or improving quality.
