TOPIC: The Russian Wedding: Stravinsky's Svadebka (Les Noces) in Context An in-depth, interdisciplinary examination of Stravinsky?s Svadebka (Les noces) in the overall context of his Russian period. Explores the work?s genesis, compositional history, music, lyrics, choreography, costumes, and stage design in relation to contemporaneous artistic movements and philosophies, the World of Art group, and the Ballets Russes. Considers the late 19th-century Russian wedding customs, village rites, gender dynamics, oral literature, and indigenous music and dance informing Svadebka, and looks briefly at works by other composers and Stravinsky himself that illuminate different aspects of his compositional process. Compares productions and performance versions. This course will fulfill, by petition, the advanced musicology requirement for the MM or DMA.
