Section Title:
Opera Production History
Section Info:
Through case studies focusing on operatic repertoire from different eras, we will examine broad shifts in opera composition and production practices, taking into consideration technology as well as aesthetics. Attention will be paid to the manner in which older repertoire has been reinterpreted across generations, and we will engage with practitioners currently active in the field of opera production. As a group we will examine passages from Rameau?s Les Borades, Handel?s Giulio Cesare, Wagner?s Tannhuser, Verdi?s Rigoletto, Debussy?s Pellas et Mlisande, Berg?s Wozzeck and Lulu, Weinberg?s Die Passagierin, Picker's Thrse Raquin, and Benjamin?s Written on Skin. Three of these works are being produced in Chicago during the spring semester. Class participants will be evaluated primarily on regular seminar participation and the development and execution of a final project centered on the stage history of an individual work or the creative activities of a leading opera director/designer. MUS 518 is an Advanced Musicology course.
