GER 572 Early Modern German Literature Gender and Genre in the Works of Georg Philipp Harsdrffer Focusing on the works of the Nrnberg polymath Georg Philipp Harsdrffer (1607-1658), this course explores his oeuvre in the context of gender and genre in the seventeenth century. His eight-volume Frauenzimmer Gesprchspiele is widely acclaimed for its progressive attitudes concerning social interaction of the genders. Literary genres of various kinds?drama, poetry, novellas, opera, emblems, conversations, aphorisms, pastoral eclogues, to name just a few?are investigated in their cultural context of literary societies, peace proceedings, the querelle de femmes, autograph albums, printing and publishing, book history and collecting, festival performances, and science and technology. This course presents an ideal opportunity for students wishing to explore early modern German (and Latin) literature and the other arts: for example, music, book illustrations, and printing. The course will draw on the works of all Nrnberg poets of the tie with a special focus on Harsdrffer. Guiding all study will be the theme of gender and genre.
