GER 205: Germany and Europe: A Struggle for Identity. Spring 2014. This course introduces students to controversial cultural issues in contemporary Europe as they play out in the German context, thus illuminating both broader European and more specifically German dynamics. The central theme concerns the "struggle for identity" that underlies many of the controversies surrounding European integration today. Particular attention will be paid to debates on migration, religion, language, and the long-term effects of World War II. Primary materials: novels, films, documentaries, current media sources, and some background readings. Satisfies the Gen Ed requirements for "Historical and Philosophical Perspectives" and "Western/Comparative Cultures". No prerequisites or prior knowledge necessary; taught IN ENGLISH.
