GER 494/MACS 494 - German Cinema II: DEFA: East German Cinema 1946-1992 After World War II Germany was divided into two countries, East Germany and West Germany. Both countries developed their own distinct national film industry. This class introduces students to the often underrepresented cinema of East German by looking at representative films produced by the East German film production company DEFA between 1946 and 1992. We will encounter a wide variety of different genres, styles, and approaches to film as an artform. By exploring key figures and themes of films in their historical, film historical, political, and social context, we will gain an understanding of the films and the history that shaped them.
