Seminar-style practicum in the teaching of undergraduate courses in Western and non-western music for musicology and non-musicology majors. Intensive review and discussion of pedagogical materials. Instruction in syllabus and lecture design, presentational and discussion styles, and use of multimedia and educational technology.

Prerequisite: Graduate musicology majors or consent of instructor.

TOPIC: "Musical Improvisation and Pedagogy, an Ethnomusicological Approach" This course looks at musical improvisation in a range of genres, styles, and traditions from around the world with a focus on pedagogy, or the transmission of knowledge and technique. We will consider general theories of improvisation and musical creativity, look analytically at examples of improvised music, and develop hands-on techniques for musical improvisation. Much of the coursework will be experiential, and students will be asked to engage in improvisatory play consistently throughout the term. For final projects students will be expected to develop age-appropriate pedagogical resources to incorporate improvisation in their teaching
