Section Title:
African American Childrens Lit
Section Info:
African American literature for youth has a history dating from the 1890s (perhaps earlier if manuscripts are found) with the work of Mrs. A. E. Johnson. The literature has had a precarious existence since the 1900s. The intent of the course is multifaceted. We will read widely in African American literature for youth from the 1800s-2100s. All genres and formats including folktales, poetry, fiction, nonfiction and graphic novels are included. Other materials such as author/illustrator interviews, research studies, and monographs are required reading. Questions explored include: How is the literature defined? What artistic issues shape the literature? Has the literature been institutionalized? What are the factors that determine its publication, sales, and use? Additional topics include discussions about audience, literary quality, reader response, the imperiled nature of the literature, and the use of the literature in schools, communities, and libraries.
