Topic: The Early Modern Self-Aware Image: Materiality and Netherlandish Visual Culture. What kind of object is a panel painting or print; what kinds of agency can it mobilize; what forms of value does it possess or profess? Religious iconoclasm, the rise of global capital mercantilism, a developing culture of art collecting, and emergent medical and scientific inquiry transformed the conditions for images in the 17th century Netherlands, prompting new claims for what a picture is and what it does. This seminar will focus on recent scholarship exploring the "self-aware image" -- one that registers the condition of its materiality, mobility, fungibility -- as a particular early modern invention. While our focus will mainly be on the "self-aware image" as a phenomenon of early modern Netherlandish culture, we will also consider work by contemporary artists who engage this history in their own reflection upon what and how pictures perform. Our work will entail encounters with a range of art historical methods and theories.
