EcoArtEnvironmentalImagination
Section Info:
Topic: Crossing Borders: Eco-Art History and the Environmental Imagination. As reports about climate change become commonplace, we hear more and more about the dire consequences of our activities on the planet -- how our cars, our factories, our ways of cultivating crops, have steadily diminished the earth's resources and contributed to the warming of the earth's atmosphere. What are we, as visual humanists, to do? Since the early 1990s, many historians and literary historians have rewritten their disciplinary bodies through eco-criticism, posing questions that engage the place of the environment in any historical moment and dislodge the centrality of human beings. How can art history contribute to this conversation? Our investigation of eco-art history -- its accomplishments and its future -- will not be limited to any particular historical period or to any particular place. Crossing borders within the discipline and between disciplines will be one of our goals.
