TOPIC: WAGNER'S RING From the moment Wagner hatched the idea that would become The Ring of the Nibelung it was an exceptionally ambitious plan. The project grew from a single drama about the fall of the hero Siegfried to a four-part work produced in a theatre specially designed for its premiere in 1876. At that time, the Festival Theatre in Bayreuth boasted cutting-edge technology which was intended to realize Wagner?s vision of sophisticated illusions. We will begin this course by tracing the genesis of the Ring and considering its premiere, both as a multi-media showcase and a media spectacle of the highest order. From there will we examine more closely the drama and music of the four parts of Wagner?s tetralogy. In the concluding segment of the course we will consider why this 19th-century artwork has been produced more frequently in our generation than any time prior. In recent years, Wagner?s Ring has been a vehicle for daring technological experiments in ways which invite us to revisit this artwork afresh as well as in relation to its origins.
