Contemporary Music Listening The focus here will be primarily on listening to a large amount of contemporary music (most of it from the past c.60 years), with supportive discussion of the theoretical, philosophical, and technical elements. The emphasis on listening will reduce, but not eliminate the analysis component. The purpose of the course is to expand each student's familiarity with a large and diverse body of work, and to pursue the details of these works in student compositions and analytical papers. Music performance majors can take the course for upper level or graduate theory credit. In addition to weekly assignments: composers taking the course will be expected to produce a final composition; anyone taking the course for upper level or graduate theory credit will be expected to produce a final written analysis project and class presentation.
