Music 523 Seminar in Musicology Section A: Music as Commodity, 1880-1930 This seminar will consider the idea and cultural significance of music as commodity through a series of historical case-studies of the selling of musical "goods" in Europe and America, 1880-1930. The processes and consequences of commodification will be key aspects of the seminar, and approaches to the topic will be deliberately varied, to include the traditional ways of defining and understanding music as commodity (markets for pianos, sheet music, piano transcriptions, player-pianos, phonograph recordings, etc.), as well as less usual ones (from proficiency examinations, journalism, and concerts to the way in which music itself has been used to sell non-musical products).
