DISCOVERY COURSE -- 1ST EIGHT WEEKS OF THE SEMESTER -- 3 HOURS CREDIT MUSIC IN THE NEW HOLLYWOOD FILM In 1967, Bonnie and Clyde heralded a decade of innovative filmmaking generally described as the �New Hollywood.� New Hollywood films such as The Graduate (1968), The Godfather films (1972 and 1974), Nashville (1975) and Taxi Driver (1976) share key formal, visual, and thematic characteristics. This course will focus primarily on the use of music by New Hollywood directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and Robert Altman in relation to film music and popular music traditions of the late 1960s and 1970s. DISCOVERY COURSE -- Vocal Music in the AFrican-American Context 3 hours credit A survey of the vocal music of African-Americans from the solo song to the gospel chorus. Vocal technique for jazz, Rhythm and Blues, and gospel music will be discussed, with particular attention given to text delivery, improvisation, and the extended use of the chest voice. DISCOVERY COURSE -- HEART, BODY AND SOUL! CONTEMPORARY VOCAL STYLES AND TECHNIQUES 3 hours An exploration of American secular and sacred vocal musical styles. Sources will include articles, artist's biographical excerpts, historical contexts of the medium, listening to and evaluation of recorded examples, musical score and text analysis, faculty/guest artist/student interchange, rehearsal and performance observation of professional singers, and problem solving through live performance by enrollees in the class. Improvisatory concepts will be introduced and developed through the Negro Spiritual; Jazz, Pop, and American Folk idioms; and Gospel music. DISCOVERY COURSE - 2 hours credit CREATIVE DIGITAL AUDIO RECORDING/EDITING TECHNIQUES An introductory class offering information and hands-on experience with digital audio recording/editing hardware and software in a creative context within the contemporary concert art music environment. Topics will include recording/sound reinforcement equipment, interconnections, compatibility, microphones, preferred microphone placements and methods with specific recording and sound processing techniques. Students will work directly with the technology through a series of assignments, experiments, and creative art music compositions realized during weekly lab times. DISCOVERY COURSE -- 3 HOURS CREDIT GROUP INSTRUCTION IN VOCAL TECHNIQUE AND INTERPRETATION Emphasizes vocal development through an understanding of breathing, phonation, resonation, and articulation techniques. These techniques will be explored through the study and performance of such genres as classical, sacred, musical theater, jazz, and a broad spectrum of world music and popular forms. The emphasis will be on singing for the joy of making music as well as to increase musical ability and artistry. Multi-media will be used to enhance instruction and help develop appreciation of all styles of singing. All of the class will participate in a public recital at the end of the semester to demonstrate the semester's progress and achievement!
