Music 521 � Spring 2009 History and impact of sound recording This class will address the development of the recording industry world-wide, with special attention to music recording in the U.S., Europe, India, and the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). The focus will be on the hundred years from the earliest recordings up to the end of the analog era (ca. 1980), but student projects may extend into the digital era. Topics to be discussed include: the spread of recording around the world; what music was and was not recorded; what markets were and were not served; the development of the star system in both popular and classical music; �race records� and the emergence of jazz, blues, and country music in the U.S.; the rise and impact of radio; stylistic hegemony imposed and resisted; and changes in musical performance observable in recordings over time. Prerequisites: graduate standing or permission of the instructor. Music 415 or 507 are not prerequisites for this class.
