We will use simulations to examine perspective taking and what it means in today's society. In addition, this course will look at implications for empathy related to cultural competencies. Reading and writing autobiography will offer freshman time to read autobiographies/memoirs of the lives of others (if possible drawing upon the published works of Pioneers in their field) as they begin a new phase of their own lives. Exploring Social Issues Through Children's Literature. This course examines contemporary issues affecting the lives of children and youth as portrayed in current children's literature. Issues such as child abuse/neglect, violence, body image, teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, and prejudice/ discrimination will be explored through reading, writing, and discussion. Most reading selections are for adolescent/young adult readers because of the nature of the content. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to Freshman. Students should only enroll in one Discovery course.
