Credit: 3 hours.

Practical application of melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic principles used in jazz improvisation. Practice in the use of jazz chord qualities and jazz cadences in improvising. Descriptions of basic improvisational sequences, modal improvising, symmetric/synthetic scale usage, symmetric chord usage, and approach-note techniques.

Prerequisite: MUS 361, or placement by exam with consent of instructor.
