This course will provide beginning piano instruction combined with a general appreciation for the development of the piano and a historical overview of some of the less advanced music written for the instrument dating from circa 1700 to the present. MUSIC AND MATH, 3 hours. An opportunity for students to learn how to model mathematically some aspects of music. The musical expression of mathematical ideas (and vice versa) will help students to understand some of those ideas in a new way. At the same time, the mathematical analysis will enrich the students' encounter with music. Topics of the course will include sound waves, chords and scales, instruments, aspects of musical notation, symmetry, and The Wurfspiel: musical dice games by Mozart and others, music and artificial intelligence, and David Cope's Experiments in Musical Intelligence (EMI). VOCAL MUSIC IN THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN CONTEXT, 3 hours. A survey of the vocal music of African-Americans from the solo song to the gospel chorus. Vocal technique for jazz, Rhythm and Blues, and gospel music will be discussed, with particular attention given to text delivery, improvisation, and the extended use of the chest voice. A WORLD VIEW OF CONTEMPORARY COMPOSITION, 2 hours. A look at and listen to important contributions in contemporary art music of the past 50-100 years, drawing on international contributions, primarily from the United States, and countries in Europe and Asia. The integration, fusion, and juxtaposition of diverse national and cultural sources, has lead to powerful and meaningful results from composers and musicians around the world. The focus will begin with experimental composition and performance practices, however, jazz, rock, popular music, electronic and computer music, and improvisation will be included. The class will also function as a composition workshop, where the ideas, techniques, and approaches studied in the music of others will serve as models for student compositions, which we will listen to and discuss as part of the class. The ability to read and write music at at least an introductory level is strongly preferred. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. In addition to listening, discussing, and analyzing the selected piano works, students will also have the opportunity to study and perform representative easy to intermediate piano pieces in both acoustic and electronic piano laboratory settings. Students can opt to take only the seminar portion of the class for 3 credit hours or the combination of the seminar and lab (performance/discussion) portions for 4-5 credit hours. Title: Group Instruction in Vocal Technique and Interpretation Description: Emphasizes vocal development through an understanding of breathing, phonation, resonation, and articulation techniques. These techniques will be explored through the study and performance of such genres as classical, sacred, musical theater, jazz, and a broad spectrum of world music and popular forms. The emphasis will be on singing for the joy of making music as well as to increase musical ability and artistry. Multi-media will be used to enhance instruction and help develop appreciation of all styles of singing. All of the class will participate in a public recital at the end of the semester to demonstrate the semester's progress and achievement! 3 hours of credit
