Digital Citizenship and Ethics in PK-12 explores our relationships with technology from a humanities perspective as we analyze what it means to be a citizen of digital spaces, recognize ethical issues inherent to technology use, analyze the impact of innovation on individuals and society, and consider the implications of these ideas for our students and our curricula. In order to be a leader in digital citizenship education and an advocate for the ethical design, use and regulation of new technologies, educators, technology leaders, and information specialists will need to understand the historical context and present state of digital citizenship education through the lenses of legal obligation, various local and national sets of standards, traditional frameworks of citizenship education, and research on youth and technology. Upon completion of this course, participants will be more prepared to lead digital citizenship and ethics conversations, curricular initiatives, and make informed decisions regarding the education of students in a digital age. IS 581 Foundations of Media Literacy provides students with both theoretical and practical knowledge of media literacy necessary to develop personal media literacy skills and knowledge to be better equipped for teaching and leading others in the future. Media literacy builds on traditional definitions of literacy that emphasize reading and writing, that is the consumption and production of printed texts. Instead of focusing exclusively on printed texts, however, media literacy explores the consumption and production of diverse methods of communication such as images, games, and music. For much of its history, media literacy has emphasized people's consumption of mass media including newspapers, television, and film. In recent years, media literacy researchers and teachers have increasingly emphasized the production of media as well as newer forms of social and participatory media. Participants will increase personal media literacy skills and knowledge to be better equipped to teach and lead others in this area. Day1Access course materials cost $33.88.
