Let’s Play: Understanding the Role of Play in Life and Art

Credit: 3 hours.

Explores the ways that play is integrated into our socio-cultural fabric. Students will develop a broad understanding of play in different contexts: its history, play and nature, play in human development, learning, play spaces, games, art, and in futurist thinking. Chief among the goals for the course is an emphasis on play as a fundamental and enriching force for people of all ages, and something to cultivate in life and in art.

In this course students will explore the variety of ways that play is integrated into our socio-cultural fabric. Topics will include key ideas from the history of play, play and nature, play in human development, play in learning, play spaces, games and play, play in art, and the role of play in futurist thinking. Students will develop a broad understanding of the interconnectedness of play in different contexts and move beyond common misconceptions of play as something that is only for children.
